Do you remember when you were a kid, lying in bed, scared of the thing under there or in your closet? Do you remember when you’d cry for your parents, and they’d come soothe you and reassure you that there was no such thing as monsters? Then they’d tuck you back into bed, pat you on the head, or kiss you on the forehead and you’d go to bed not fearing the thing that might or might not have been there?

I remember.

I also now know it’s all a fucking lie.

Monsters are real.

I know because I was attacked by one. Turned into one.

Who am I?

The name’s Arthur Osmond. I live in England. I had my first encounter with the supernatural a year ago while on a camping trip with some buddies. I… was the only one to make it back. The Lancashire Forest, which was where we decided to camp, is known for wolves, but we knew that. Took the necessary precautions. Stayed away from known areas with wolves. Though nothing prepared us for what we encountered…

And the doctors who treated me didn’t believe me, either. I’m sure I sounded like a sodding loon, spouting off about a big bad wolf that walks on its hind legs. I stopped before they decided to lock me in a psych ward. Said my shocked mind must’ve exaggerated what I saw. That it was probably just a regular wolf.

I, of course, knew better.

The year that followed was hell.

I couldn’t control the beast I turned into on those nights of the full moon. I’ve watched it kill. Watched it feast. I… remember every victim’s face.

But it’s been a year.

I’ve had a year to try and gain control of the beast.

Not complete control, sadly, but I’ve managed to be able to influence where the beast goes. And tonight, that will be to an abandoned church I heard about in the town I’m currently passing through. I didn’t catch the name. I guess it’s more of a rural village, actually.

Anyway, as we reach the church, I look it over. It’s a bloody mess, let me tell you. Its brick façade is missing sections. The windows are broken and boarded up with planks of wood. The only real pristine piece of the thing is its doorway and the gargoyle that guards it. The demonic creature has a few scuffs and cracks, like it’s been in a few fights. But… that’s just bloody mad, right?

I heard the stories about the place from villagers. That the church was abandoned because it was haunted. Not haunted by a spirit, though. Haunted by that damn gargoyle. I didn’t believe it at first… but now that I get a look at the demonic statue, I’m having second thoughts.

It has a skull-like head with horns twisting out the back of it. Its eyes, sunk deep in their sockets, are closed; the creature slacking on its duties. Its arms are long and boney, its fingers equally so, tipped with sharp talons and gripping the doorway’s roof.
